FULTON COUNTY SETTLES WITH FAMILY OF LASHAWN THOMPSON FOR FOUR MILLION DOLLARS

The Georgia NAACP is pleased to discover that the Fulton County Commission and Fulton County have accepted responsibility for the death of LaShawn Thompson. The family of Lashawn Thompson, who died in September while incarcerated at the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, has reached a $4 million settlement with the county. The agreement was reached Wednesday in a closed-door executive session with the commissioners. The full details of the settlement will not be released.

We believe that this is the first step in achieving accountability for the sudden passing of LaShawn Thompson at the Fulton County Jail. Alongside Mr. Thompson and his family's legal counsel, Attorneys Ben Crump and Michael Harper, the NAACP will continue to advocate for justice on their behalf.

"No one (especially Pretrial detainees) should be required to reside in the deplorable conditions of the Fulton County Jail. The Georgia NAACP will continue to advocate for change, justice, and accountability for the overall prison conditions at the detention center, according to the organization's state president, Gerald Griggs.
