Georgia NAACP Demands Federal Oversight of Macon-Bibb County JailPresident Gerald Griggs Urges DOJ to Intervene Immediately
MACON, GA — Following a walkthrough of the Macon-Bibb County Jail alongside the Sheriff and District Attorney, Georgia NAACP President Gerald Griggs is calling on the U.S. Department of Justice to immediately investigate and take oversight of the facility due to dangerous and inhumane conditions.
“Sections of this jail are simply uninhabitable,” said Griggs. “Cracked walls, broken plumbing, poor lighting, and unsanitary conditions create an environment no human should be subjected to. This is a civil and human rights crisis.”
Griggs is urging the DOJ to launch an immediate investigation into potential constitutional violations, citing serious risks to the health and safety of both inmates and staff.
“We cannot wait while lives are at risk,” Griggs added. “The federal government must step in now.”
The Georgia NAACP is also demanding immediate local action to fund emergency repairs and infrastructure upgrades at the jail. “There is no excuse for this level of neglect,” said Griggs. “Local officials must act without delay to restore safety, dignity, and accountability.”
The Georgia NAACP remains committed to ensuring humane conditions and justice across all correctional facilities in the state.
