Today members of the public, legislators, activists and stakeholders called on Governor Brian Kemp to call a special session of the Georgia Legislature for the purpose of enacting legislation to address the epidemic of gun violence in the State of Georgia.
The devastating impact of gun violence, particularly on Black communities, cannot be ignored. Countless lives have been lost, with tens of thousands of gun-related deaths and hundreds of thousands of injuries. This issue is especially grave for young Black men, who bear a disproportionate burden of the violence. Urgent measures are necessary to address the surge in gun violence, especially within Black communities and communities of color.
"Georgia is currently facing a grave epidemic of gun violence, and I wholeheartedly support the call for a special session of the State Legislature to confront the escalating rates of firearm-related attacks and fatalities. The need for sensible gun regulations in Georgia has never been more apparent. We can no longer rely solely on thoughts and prayers; it is time for decisive legislation and proactive measures in our state," emphasized Gerald Griggs, President of the Georgia State Conference. "The Georgia NAACP is committed to addressing the issue of gun violence on all fronts, particularly through legislation that addresses the ease of access to firearms in Georgia."
